I'm Jo Liddle, an artist and print-maker, based on the North East coast of England.
I’ve been an artist as long as I can remember and the desire to create has driven me throughout my life. It led me into teaching, a career that I loved and that lasted over 30 years. However, as anyone who’s taught knows, it will take up all the time you have, and more.
Since retiring and moving back to the beautiful North East coast, I’ve had so much more time to devote to my own work and the inspiration and enthusiasm to develop different ideas usually means I have several projects on the go at the same time.
My current practice is based on personal narrative, loss and memory; exploring the liminal spaces between what was, and what is remembered and the trace, if any, that we leave behind.
Experiences and memories are layered and lost over time; fleeting and difficult to grasp. I try to recreate a sense of lost, or fading memories through the use various materials, usually oil paint to reveal a lost memory, or to hide it behind a curtain or in a faded light, creating a tension between the seen and the unseen, or almost seen.
